Alice Birch’s play »Anatomy of a Suicide« hurts.
Having depression, being a mother, being a daughter.
The strong female main characters have been so closely interwoven over three generations that they despair of it. What does the mother’s pain mean for the daughter? Tornness, connectedness, togetherness. All of this is not only reflected in the narrative, but also in the form Alice Birch gives the play.
Three scenes at the same time on one stage. The scenes overlap, fight against each other, flow together again at certain points. Typographically divided into three columns, the reader is faced with the challenge of following all three stories at the same time. Due to that the reader is taking a step closer to the emotional world of Carol, Anna and Bonnie and is quickly torn between the three generations.
